BOOK: Pictorial & Decorative Title Pages from Music Sources 201 Ex 1968 Vintage. Book has stickers and scuffs creases and marks on cover. Pages intact and good condition. This book reproduces 201 decorative music title pages dating from 1500 to 1800. Nearly all reproduced from rare, early editions found in the major libraries of London. Paris, Bologna, Vienna, Washington, D.C., etc., these pages are among the most beautifully execut. ed work in the history of books and printing. The title pages are grouped by cultural period and by the nationality of their publishers (Italian, French, Flemish, German, and English). Included are the title pages for Petrucci's 1501 volume of chansons and motets, thought to be the first work in mensural notation printed with movable type; Orlando di Lasso's Primus liber modulorum (1571), printed by Le Roy and Ballard; J. S. Bach's Clavier Übung (1731); The Musical Entertainer (1737), ornamented and published by George Bickham; Haydn's Seasons (1802), printed by Breitkopf & Härtel; Mozart's Die Zauberföte (1793), printed by N. Simrock; Beetho-ven's three Trios, Opus 1 (1795), printed by Artaria; and title pages for works by Palestrina, Hans Leo Hassler, John Dowland, Caccini, Frescobaldi, Schein, Corelli, Gluck, Pachelbel, Handel, Boccherini, and many others. Printed one to a large-sized page, each title page is described in a caption, identifying the composer and name of the work, the publisher, place and date of publication, as well as the present owner of the copy represented. The caption also provides brief background information on the composer and the work in question, together with its printing history, the name of the designer and engraver (where known), and the iconography of the design. Graphically pleasing in themselves, these music title pages also yield information about the history of music, music publishing, printing techniques, artistic styles, etc. Now for the first time readily available in an extensive collection to English-speaking readers, the title pages will interest music students and music lovers, students of the graphic arts, and connoisseurs of book printing and book production. Artists will also find these attractive pages reproduced in clear, sharp detail- endlessly useful to their work in ill-ustration, advertising, commercial design, and many other areas.
